Snake bite

Most snake bite patients who turn up at my hospital emergency department  have not been bitten at all. This mistake is known as a stick bite but every suspected case is always treated seriously, simply because certainty may be impossible.

If in doubt it is important to apply first aid and alert health services, usually by ambulance or a lift to the hospital.

But wait. Is there anything you can do on the spot to start treatment? Yes,  there is, and its not the old  cutting sucking or torniquets. the treatment is much less scary and consists of a firm bandage which encases the entire affected limb. most snakebites occur in the lower limb, so it must be to the groin. two wide bandages may be needed, or tear up some clothing into strips. time is of the essence for effective treatment

in order to understand the reason for this firm bandage, snake venom travels largely in the lymphatic system, rather than in the blood, so your bandage does not have to strangle circulation, but to slow down the flow of lymph to the glands.

keep the patient and the carer as well, in a calm state and movement to a minimum.
